Understanding

Your New Dentures

Your new dentures may feel different from what you're used to. If you've never worn dentures before, they might seem strange at first—but don't worry! It's normal for everyone with new dentures to experience this feeling initially. With time, it will pass.

Adjusting

Period for New Dentures

Each person requires a different settling-in period when adjusting to new dentures. It may take a couple of weeks before you fully adjust to them. Our exceptional team is always here if any problems arise during this transition period.

  • If discomfort occurs, remove the denture and try again later.
  • Persistent pain should be addressed by making an appointment with us; adjustments can resolve most issues.
  • An increase in saliva flow is normal, but it will settle within a day or two.

Getting Used to

Your New Dentures

Take It Slow & Steady

When you first start using your new dentures, it's important to take things slowly. Begin with small bites of soft foods and avoid anything hard or chewy. This approach will help you get accustomed to your dentures without putting too much pressure on your mouth.

Start with Softer Foods

To ease into eating with your new dentures, start with foods that are gentle on your gums. Consider options like eggs, fish, cooked vegetables, and even a little ice cream. These choices won't place as much stress on your mouth as you adjust.

Eating on Both Sides

Try not to bite down using just your front teeth or chew only on one side. Doing so could dislodge your dentures. Instead, aim to chew evenly on both sides of your mouth. As you gain confidence, you'll be ready to try tougher foods.

Caring for

Your Dentures

Proper care is crucial for maintaining the longevity of your dentures.

Cleaning Steps

  • Brush Gently: Use a soft brush and soap (not toothpaste) to clean all surfaces of the denture.
  • Overnight Care: After cleaning at night, place the dentures in a container filled with water.

Tips

  • Avoid leaving your denture in hot water, as it may cause damage.
  • Follow the instructions provided with any denture cleaning product you choose.
  • Special denture brushes are available for better cleaning results.

How Long

Will Your Dentures Last?

Typically, dentures last between 5 – 8 years. To ensure they continue fitting well over time, it's best to visit us every two years for a check-up. As your mouth changes and gums shrink slowly over time, you might need a "reline" process to refit your denture comfortably.
